A $3 million contract was approved Wednesday by the Metra Board of Directors to renovate Calumet Station in southwest suburban East Hazel Crest on the Electric Line.

The Metra board approved John Burns Construction Co. of Orland Park as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, according to a statement from Metra. Plans for upgrading the station — located at Park Avenue and 174th Street — include renovating station buildings, warming houses and an elevator. Metra also plans for replacing stairs at both ends of the station, rebuilding the platform and adding new lighting.

The project is part of Metra’s 2016 construction program, which includes approximately $2oo million in improvements at 27 stations, 21 bridges and 24 road crossings, according to the statement.
