A fire in west suburban Naperville rendered a 16-unit apartment building uninhabitable Monday night.

Authorities were notified at 8:10 p.m. about an activated fire alarm at the building in the 800 block of Beaumont Drive, according to a statement from the Naperville Fire Department. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and heavy fire in a second-floor apartment.

The fire was under control within an hour of their arrival, fire officials said. All occupants had left the building before crews arrived and no injuries were reported.

The building sustained fire damage to multiple second-floor units and smoke damage throughout the structure, according to the fire department. It was determined to be uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross was called to the scene to help residents find alternate housing arrangements.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.
