(VERNON HILLS) No one was hurt when a small fire started at a Mariano’s grocery store in north suburban Vernon Hills on Monday.

About 1 p.m., a fire started around cooking equipment in the hot food area of the store in the 1700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, according to the Countryside Fire Protection District.

Employees used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames before firefighters arrived, officials said.

The store was closed for a brief time as crews checked the exhaust system and worked to clear smoke from the store, officials said. Two employees were evaluated by paramedics and released at the scene.
