‘Offensive graffiti’ sprayed inside Northwestern chapel

A Northwestern University chapel was vandalized with graffiti Thursday night, according to the university president.

The walls and the organ inside the Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Rd. in Evanston, were covered in racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, and other offensive graffiti, said Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro.

“On behalf of the entire Northwestern community, I express our shock and dismay at the abhorrent act of vandalism committed last night,” Schapiro said in the statement.

University Police are reviewing video of the incident and searching for the suspects, but it has been determined that there is no immediate danger to a specific individual or the campus community, Schapiro said.

The university is committed to finding those responsible and to creating a safe, secure and welcoming environment for the entire community, Schapiro said.

“This disgusting act of hatred violates the deepest values and core commitments of our University and is an affront to us all,” Shapiro said.

The University said it would not comment beyond President Shapiro’s statement Friday night, according to Bob Rowley, Director of Media Relations at Northwestern University.
