A 13-year-old boy from the city’s West Side has died as a result of injuries he suffered when the stolen van he was riding in crashed last weekend while speeding away from the police in North Lawndale, the police said Saturday.

Keshawn Horton died Friday afternoon at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was taken after being ejected from the van late the night of July 17, police said.

Officers said they pulled over the Dodge van, which had been reported stolen, in the 3200 block of West Roosevelt Road after it ran a stop sign, but the driver then sped off.

They didn’t give chase because, under Chicago Police Department policy, a stolen vehicle alone isn’t enough to warrant a high-speed pursuit, police said.

Minutes later, the van slammed into two parked vehicles about a mile away, at Ogden and St. Louis avenues, throwing Keshawn from the vehicle.

The driver and another passenger ran away and remained at large as of Saturday, police said.
