Man dead, another wounded in Austin shooting

One man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

The two men were sitting on a front porch in the 4900 block of West Monroe at 1:52 p.m. when someone walked up and opened fire, according to Chicago Police.

Antonio White, 29, was shot twice in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. White’s home address wasn’t known Tuesday night.

An 18-year-old man was shot in the back and right leg and taken in serious condition to Stroger, police said.

Officers were called to the same block later Tuesday to “disrupt gang activity” based on a tip from the community, according to Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Three guns were seized and three people were subsequently taken into custody.

Police said it was not immediately clear whether the arrests were connected to the earlier shooting.

“Officers likely prevented another shooting,” Guglielmi said.
