A 33-year-old man was killed when a handgun he had in his waistband discharged Thursday night in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

About 11:55 p.m., Steven Winston was sitting in a parked car in the 6100 block of South Winchester, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The gun was in his waistband, and it went off while he was moving the vehicle, police said.

Winston, who lived nearby, was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 12:57 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

An autopsy Friday did not rule on cause and manner of death, with results pending police investigation, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The handgun was recovered, police said. Area Central detectives have opened a death investigation.
