A man was shot to death early Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

About 2:10 a.m., officers saw shots fired in the 1500 block of South Christiana, where a man was shot in the chest, according to Chicago Police.

Isaiah Hurley, 22, was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 1300 block of South Lawndale Avenue.

The officers spotted several people leaving the scene of the shooting and a foot pursuit ensued, police said.

Two people were taken into custody, but they were released without charges being filed, police said Tuesday morning. The investigation is ongoing.

Yolanda Johnson, 39, said she and her 7-year-old son have lived on the corner of 15th Street and Christiana for about four years.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before, it’s really scary,” Johnson said. “I’m glad I wasn’t outside when it happened.”

She added that she had just gotten home from a friend’s house and was taking off her shoes when she heard at least five shots ring out on her block. When she came downstairs, she saw police establishing the crime scene with yellow tape outside her home.

“This is really sad,” Johnson said. “Your kids can’t play outside in Chicago anymore. This stuff really needs to stop. Thank God [my son] is at his grandparent’s house tonight.”

“Bullets don’t have eyes,” she added. “It seems like anyone can get shot any time in this city.”
