Police: Suspect in Elmhurst bank robbery fatally shot himself

A 44-year-old man who investigators believe robbed a bank Wednesday morning in the west suburbs shot himself to death Thursday, according to Hillside police.

About 5 p.m. Thursday, officers spotted a man in a Dukin Donuts in the 300 block of Wolf Road, just south of Proviso West High School, whose description matched that of a suspect who robbed a bank the day before in Elmhurst, Hillside police Sergeant Tony Milazzo said.

The man, whom police identified as Christopher Stephen, walked out of the shop and began walking north on Wolf Road as more officers arrived on the scene, Milazzo said.

When the officers began to approach, Stephen took a gun from his waistband and shot himself in the head, Milazzo said.

Authorities believe that Stephen was the man who walked into Inland Bank at 539 S. Spring Road in Elmhurst at 10:30 a.m., presented a note to a teller and demanded money, according to the FBI and Elmhurst police.
