A burglar who entered a home in Riverside while a family slept now faces two felony charges.
James M. Ussery, 23, was charged with residential burglary and burglary, according to Riverside police Chief Tom Weitzel, who called Ussery a “prolific burglar” who has been arrested 22 times and convicted of burglary six times.
Ussery, of East Garfield Park, entered a home May 10 in the 100 block of North Cowley Road in Riverside after cutting the screen to a small kitchen window, climbed inside and stole cell phones, laptop computers and other electronic items while the homeowner, his wife and their five children were sleeping, according to Weitzel.
But Ussery left behind a bike stolen elsewhere in Riverside, and fingerprint and DNA evidence was collected from the home, police said.
Investigators tracked the stolen phones to a business in Norridge that paid cash for the phones, which already had been shipped to San Diego, according to the police, who said they got them returned and arrested Ussery at an XSport Fitness in Norridge where he was playing basketball around 5 p.m. Friday.
Ussery was on parole for a 2014 residential burglary in Oak Park at the time of his arrest and also was being sought by police in Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn and Morton Grove, Weitzel said.
