A man and a woman were injured in a two-vehicle crash near north suburban Newport Township Saturday night.

A 24-year-old woman from McHenry County was traveling in a 2004 Nissan sedan eastbound on Route 173, west of Kilbourne Avenue, about 10:45 p.m. when she lost control, crossed the center lanes of Route 173 and crashed into a Volvo tractor-trailer traveling westbound, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.

The driver of the Nissan was trapped in her vehicle and extricated by Newport Fire Protection District, the sheriff’s office said. She was then transported to Condell Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Volvo, a 39-year-old man from Mount Prospect, was transported to Condell Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

Route 173 was closed for about three hours while crash investigators were at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County sheriff’s office and the Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
