A woman fatally shot a man who broke into her home and beat her early Sunday in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

About 5:15 a.m., the 30-year-old man broke into a home in the 400 block of East 62nd Street and began to beat the woman who lived there, according to Chicago Police.

The 28-year-old woman was able to grab a handgun and shot the man to death during the struggle, police said.

The man has been identified as Reginald Brown of the 400 block of North Springfield, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 a.m. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the chest, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Police said the woman knew the man and the incident was domestic-related.

The woman has a valid FOID card and no charges were expected to be filed in the shooting.
