A woman fatally struck by a car last week in the South Side Avalon Park neighborhood — a crash for which the driver has been cited — has been identified
Sonja M. Stevenson was crossing the street in the 8100 block of South Stony Island Avenue about 8:05 p.m. March 1 when she was struck by a Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling southbound, Chicago Police said.
The 45-year-old Stevenson was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
An autopsy showed Stevenson, who lived in the 4500 block of South Calumet, died of multiple blunt force injuries from being struck by the car, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled an accident.
The driver of the Monte Carlo, a 46-year-old man, remained at the scene after the crash, police said. He was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway.
