Jay Cutler (thumb) misses Bears practice, Alshon Jeffery limited

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler did not practice Wednesday, two days after spraining the thumb on his right, throwing hand. He was in attendance and wore a cast on the thumb, but did not participate. Backup Brian Hoyer is expected to start Sunday night against the Cowboys.

Alshon Jeffery joined the Bears injury list for the first time during the regular season, practicing on a limited basis Wednesday because of a knee injury.

The Bears are likely being cautious with Jeffery, who totaled 96 yards on five catches Monday night and has 201 receiving yards on the season.

After missing all four preseason games and seven regular-season starts last year, Jeffery has remained mostly injury-free this season since tweaking his hamstring in Bourbonnais.

Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan had thumb surgery Wednesday, while coach John Fox confirmed that outside linebacker Lamarr Houston has a torn ACL. He did not yet declare him out for the season, though he figures to be.

Other Bears that missed practice Wednesday include Eddie Goldman, who who will likely miss a few weeks with an ankle injury; running back Ka’Deem Carey (hamstring), safeties Adrian Amos (concussion) and Chris Prosinski (calf); and cornerback Bryce Callahan (concussion).

Those who were limited: tackle Bobby Massie (toe), guard Josh Sitton (shoulder) and cornerbacks Kyle Fuller (knee), Sherrick McManis (wrist) and Tracy Porter (knee).

• Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick (back), defensive end Charles Tapper (hamstring) and quarterback Tony Romo (back) did not practice Wednesday. Tackle Doug Free (quad), defensive end Jack Crawford (shoulder) and linebacker Mark Nzeocha (Achilles’ tendon) were limited.

• The Bears promoted running back Raheem Mostert, a Purdue alum, from the practice squad and signed outside linebacker Ronald Powell to take his place.
