Marquess Wilson suffers broken foot at Bears minicamp

The Bears’ mandatory minicamp claimed its first one casualty: Marquess Wilson.

The wide receiver broke his left foot during practice Tuesday, Bears coach John Fox said Wednesday. He is undergoing surgery on Monday and is expected to be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list after missing, likely, seven to 10 weeks.

Wilson injured the same foot in December after recording a career-high 28 catches for 464 yards. He was placed on Injured Reserve and, later in the month, underwent surgery.

“(He was) disappointed, like anybody that gets injured that has to require surgery,” Fox said. “But he was in a good frame of mind.”

Wilson was supposed to compete for the Bears’ fourth receiver spot, behind Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White and Eddie Royal.

The injury opens up an opportunity for seventh-round pick Daniel Braverman and second-year player Cameron Meredith. Marc Mariani is coming off his best season as a receiver, catching 22 balls for 300 yards, and Josh Bellamy is considered a special teams cog.

“I don’t know that you’re ever comfortable with depth,” Fox said. “We’re kinda where we are right now. We’re always looking to improve. I think you have to be fortunate and stay healthy, and then you don’t have to have all that depth.

The upcoming season was a critical one for Wilson, the 2013 seventh-round pick entering the final year of his rookie contract.

He’s started 13 games over three seasons but has been hampered by injuries. He broke his clavicle during 2014 training camp, limiting him to seven games, and played in only 11 games last year.
