NEW YORK – Right-hander Adam Warren has been scheduled to make his anticipated spot start Wednesday against the Reds, after the Cub swingman made two starts in the minors to prepare.

The Cubs are using Warren’s start to give the rotation a day off during a 24-games-in-24-days stretch leading into the All-Star break. After his start, Jason Hammel, Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester and John Lackey are scheduled, in order, to finish out the first half.

Kyle Hendricks winds up with a skipped start and will pitch on 10 days rest in the second-half opener July 15 against Texas.

Maddon said the club still is considering whether to give Warren another spot start on the other side of the break, but a six-man rotation – even temporarily – is not in play.

“I’m going to have to figure out my throwing program just for that 10, 11 days, but we’ll come up with a plan,” Hendricks (6-6, 2.76 ERA) said. “When you’re feeling well you kind of just want to stay in your routine, but on the other hand, when you’re throwing well I don’t think you have much of a problem going out of routine, because you feel confident. You feel like you’re where you need to be.

“So taking a few extra days shouldn’t mess anything up or take you out of anything you’ve been doing.”

Notes: Jon Lester was named the National League’s pitcher of the month for June, after a 4-0 month with a 1.41 ERA, and 44 strikeouts with just seven walks in six starts. “He’s pitching as good as anybody right now in baseball,” Maddon said. … Outfielder Chris Coghlan left Saturday’s game in the third inning because of right rib-cage soreness. That could mean a DL move that opens a spot on the roster for infielder Tommy La Stella (hamstring), who was expected back from the DL no later than Monday.
