The White Sox acquired right-hander Anthony Ranaudo from the Texas Rangers for Class A pitcher Matt Ball and optioned Ranaudo and right-hander Scott Carroll to AAA Charlotte Thursday.

Ranaudo, 26, walked five Sox and gave up five runs in one inning Tuesday and was optioned to AAA Round Rock the following day. He allowed seven runs over 3 2/3 innings in two appearances with the Rangers.

At Round Rock, the 6-7 Ranaudo was 1-1 with a 2.02 ERA over three starts.  A 2010 first-round pick, Ranaudo became the first Red Sox pitcher in 19 years to win his first three starts in 2014. He was also named International League Pitcher of the Year with Class AAA Pawtucket that season.

Ball, 21, is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA  over 10 relief appearances with Class A Kannapolis.

The trade is reminiscent of when the Sox rocked Rangers pitcher Hector Noesi for seven runs in one inning during a game in Texas in April of 2014, then claimed him off waivers five days later based on a based in part on a recommendation from Sox pitching coach Don Cooper. Noesi eventually joined the starting rotation and had some success but fizzled out and was designated for assignment the following year.

The Sox’ 40-man roster increases to 38, and they will make a corresponding move to replace Carroll on Friday.
