White Sox return Gonzalez to AAA Charlotte; Webb recalled

TORONTO — The White Sox returned Miguel Gonzalez to AAA Charlotte Wednesday, two days after the 31-year-old right-hander made a spot start for them against the Blue Jays.

Right-hander Daniel Webb was recalled, keeping the Sox pitching staff at 13 but adding a reliever.

Gonzalez, signed to a minor-league contract before Opening Day, has a chance to return at some point as a rotation option. His performance Monday was not impressive, though, as he allowed 11 hits and five runs over 5 1/3 innings. It took Gonzalez 94 pitches to get through the first four innings, although he did finish with two scoreless innings and six strikeouts on the night. The Sox rallied to win the game 7-5.

Webb, 26, struggled during spring training but pitched to 2-1 record with a 3.38 ERA over 10 2/3 innings at Charlotte. He had two saves, five strikeouts and zero walks in seven relief appearances with the Knights.

Webb appeared in 27 games with the White Sox in 2015, going 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA (21 ER/30.0 IP) and 22 strikeouts.

Webb is 7-5 with a 4.54 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 93 career appearances with the Sox from 2013-15. The Sox got him from Toronto in a three-player trade on January 1, 2012.

The Sox (15-6) are in a stretch of 19 consecutive days without an off day and will likely keep 13 pitchers through their current road trip which concludes Sunday in Baltimore. They have an off day on Monday.

Webb joins a bullpen that leads the major leagues with a 1.39 ERA including a 0.83 mark over the last eight games. Matt Albers (0.00), Nate Jones (0.93) and closer David Robertson (0.96) all own ERAs below 1.00.
