The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Saturday night for the Chicago area that’s in effect until early Sunday.

The tornado watch is in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday for the following counties: Cook, Will, DuPage, Boone, Grundy, Kankakee, Lake, Livingston, McHenry, Peoria, Ford, Iroquois, Kendall, La Salle, Marshall, McLean, Stark, Winnebago, De Kalb, Fulton, Kane, Knox, Lee, Mason, Ogle, Tazewell and Woodford.

The tornado watch was also issued for Benton, Newton, Jasper, Porter and Lake counties in Indiana.

Severe thunderstorms were expected in the area overnight tht could bring “torrential downpours,” lightning and 60 mile-an-hour gusts, the weather service said.

A flash flood watch is in effect throughout the region until Sunday afternoon.
