Bail was set at $100,000 on Sunday for a 69-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a mentally impaired relative.

Amado Alvarez, of the 2000 block of North Laporte, was charged with criminal sexual assault. He allegedly refused to hand over a relative’s government assistance checks until he had sex with her, prosecutors said Sunday at a bond hearing.

Alvarez’s relative is “slightly mentally impaired,” prosecutors said.

Alvarez has been sexually assaulting his relative for about nine years, prosecutors said.

The most recent sexual abuse happened Tuesday.
