(ELGIN) Representatives from the U.S. Census Bureau will be conducting the American Community Survey in northwest suburban Elgin over the next few weeks.
The census bureau may contact residents via mail, phone, email or in person to collect information for community planning purposes, according to a statement from Elgin police.
Police are encouraging residents to check for a valid U.S. Census Bureau ID badge if someone comes to their home claiming to represent the bureau.
Residents should call police if they are contacted by people asking for Social Security numbers, bank or credit card account numbers, donations or their mother’s maiden name, as these are likely scammers and not census officials.
Anyone who wants to verify they’ve been in contact with genuine census bureau employees can call the regional census office at (630) 288-9200.
