SKOKIE — Maine South senior Henry Mierzwa won the individual championship and New Trier took the boys team title Saturday at the Class 3A Loyola Regional at Harms Woods.

Sixth at the regional a year ago, Mierzwa finished first in 15 minutes, 15.81 seconds to earn the first postseason title of his career.

Paced by senior Josh Rosenkranz’s second-place finish in 15:22.24 and with four others in the top 10, the Trevians won as a team with 32 points. Maine South was second with 67. Other team qualifiers for the sectional included Loyola (90), Niles North (96), Niles West (158) and Glenbrook North (165).

New Trier also won the girls regional title behind Mimi Smith, the individual champion. The senior and defending Class 3A state champion ran away from the field, crossing the finish line in 17:18.21. The Trevians totaled 24 points.

Loyola (70), Maine South (93), Glenbrook South (94), Evanston (121) and Niles West (151) rounded out the top six and advanced to the sectional. The Niles West Sectional is scheduled for Nov. 1.
