Runners take to the streets of Englewood on Sunday

SHARE Runners take to the streets of Englewood on Sunday

Let’s face it; most of the organized runs in Chicago take place either downtown or on the Near North Side, usually in Lincoln Park. Beautiful, but familiar, scenery.

So this race caught my interest because it will take a route you don’t often see. Runners will be traveling through Englewood.

The Ditch the Weight & Guns 5k race on Sunday, Nov. 2, will start and end in Englewood, with a brief turn into the Auburn Gresham community on the South Side.

The run will kick off a little later than most, 10 a.m., according to the website. (Good move, because that’s the day Daylight Savings Time ends and standard time begins.)

Runners will take off from 67th (Marquette) and Racine right at Ogden Park. They will travel down 75th Street to Damen, then head back over to 67th and wind up back at Ogden Park.

It’s being done to promote wellness and nonviolence as well as show another side of Englewood, a community too many know only from the violence that happens there, the website says.

The fee is $20. Online registration ends Oct. 31, but participants can sign up the day of the race beginning at 8:30 that morning.
