A study released Monday by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association stated that the number of bicyclists killed in motor vehicle crashes increased 16 percent from 2010 to 2012. In Illinois that figure was 80, giving the state a ranking of fifth highest for total bicycle crash deaths. However, this ranking does not take into account the state’s relatively high population and, consequently, its relatively high number of bicycle commuters. Accounting for this, based on Census data, the state is tied for 24th place with 2 deaths per 1,000 bicycle commuters. Mississippi ranks #1.
