(ST. CHARLES) A northwest suburban man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday for attacking the mother of his children and injuring a police officer who tried to arrest him.
Patrick A. Carter, 45, was arrested April 18, 2013, after he attacked the woman and her friend in a car as they were returning to her home about 10 p.m., the Kane County state’s attorney’s office said.
The friend drove to the Elgin Police Department, with Carter still hanging out of the front passenger door of her vehicle, prosecutors claimed. When police officers tried to intervene, Carter grabbed one officer’s gun belt and resisted another officer who tried to arrest him. One of the officers was slightly injured.
The victim is the mother of Carter’s three children, prosecutors said.
Carter was convicted in a bench trial in July of vehicular invasion, aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated resisting arrest, prosecutors said.
Judge John Barsanti presided over the bench trial and handed down the sentence.
Carter received an enhanced sentence because of six prior felony convictions, including unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing, and theft, prosecutors said.
Carter, of the 1900 block of Matthew Court in Elgin, will receive credit for 559 days spent in jail since his arrest, the state’s attorney’s office said.
