Led by top-five finishes from seniors Charles Nash and Billy Anderson, the Deerfield boys cross country team won the Class 2A Fenton Sectional on Saturday.

Nash led the Warriors with a second-place finish, completing the sectional course in 15 minutes, 44 seconds. Anderson was close behind, crossing the finish line in 15:57 to place fourth.

Senior Ben Chambers added another top-10 finish, taking eighth in 16:11. Classmate Alex Wolfe was 11th in 16:13. Sophomores Michael Hincker (16:28, 17th) and Robby Winter (16:57, 29th) and senior Jeremy Latronica (16:40, 21) rounded out the Deerfield lineup.

Fenton was second with 85 points. Latin, Payton, St. Viator and Elmwood Park also advanced to state.

Deerfield girls move on

Deerfield’s girls cross country team is heading to the Class 2A state meet.

The Warriors advanced from the Fenton Sectional on Saturday, scoring 97 points to place second behind champion Latin (25 points). Deerfield will run as a team at the state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria next Saturday.

Senior Abbey Osborn was Deerfield’s top finisher, placing fourth in 19:05. Latin senior Abigail Nadler (18:37) won the sectional meet.

Deerfield freshman Kelley Osborn completed the course in 19:45 to take 11th place and finish as the Warriors’ second-fastest runner. The Osborns were followed by juniors Erin Phillips (20:29, 20th), Jordyn Jensen (20:31, 22nd), Nicole Abramson (21:18, 40th) and Claudia Giacone (21:49, 49th). Freshman Molly Segall finished 41st in 21:19.

Chicago (University), Payton and Regina also advanced to the state meet.

Regina was led by a 16th-place finish from senior Kate McDonough (20:14). Seniors Audrey Jahns (20:18, 18th), Michelle Delana (20:48, 29th), Niamh Ryan (21:05, 33rd), Katie McNaughton (21:49, 50th), Grace Spiewak (22:00, 52nd) and Talia Morris (22:49, 64th) rounded out the state-qualifying lineup.
