(HIGHLAND PARK) A man armed with a handgun was shot dead by police early Monday at a hospital in north suburban Highland Park.

A few minutes after 11 p.m. Sunday, Illinois State Police responded to a crash on Route 94 near Lake Cook Road and arrested the driver for driving under the influence, according to a statement from Highland Park police.

Two passengers in the vehicle, 27-year-old Christopher M. Anderson and and a minor, were taken to Highland Park Hospital, police said in a statement.

A few hours later, about 1:30 a.m., Highland Park police responded to a call for assistance with Anderson, who was being aggressive at the hospital.

Officers and hospital staff attempted to calm Anderson, who pulled out a handgun, police said.

After “repeated efforts” to get him to drop his weapon, officers shot Anderson. He was later pronounced dead, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the shooting.
