DCFS investigating death of North Side toddler

State child welfare officials are investigating the parents of a 3-year-old boy who died Friday evening at his West Ridge neighborhood home on the North Side.

Donnell Coakley’s parents found him unresponsive in his bed about 8:40 p.m. at their home in the 6500 block of North Seeley, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy performed Saturday was inconclusive pending further studies.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of neglect by the boy’s mother and father, spokeswoman Karen Hawkins said.

Coakley’s two siblings have been taken into protective custody under a DCFS-monitored safety plan, Hawkins said.

The agency had prior contact with the boy’s mother for allegations of neglect in 2011, Hawkins said.
