Orr coach Louis Adams knew his team would have its hands full trying to stop Farragut’s hot-shooting guard Josh Adams.

“Josh [Adams] is hands down one of the best players in the city,” Lew Adams said. “He can flat out fill it up. We kept running an extra man on him and at times at appeared to frustrate him.”

The Spartans did not shut down Adams completely, but they did contain him enough to eke out a 56-50 Red-West victory Wednesday at Farragut.

It was a tough shooting day for both teams, especially in the first half. Orr shot 5 of 23 from the floor, while went Farragut 4-for-21 in the first half.

Adams made a 3-pointer as time expired in the second quarter to give the Admirals (6-3, 0-1) a 16-15 lead.

Farragut opened the second half with two technical free throws and a 3-pointer from Adams and looked like it was about to seize control of the game. But the Spartans reeled off an 11-1 run to grab momentum.  Darryl Curry scored seven consecutive points during and handed out two assists during the run.

Two free throws by Ernest Johnson cut Farragut’s deficit to 48-47 with 1:15 remaining in the game. A missed shot and three straight turnovers allowed the Spartans (2-0, 1-0) to close out the game with an 8-3 spurt.

Curry led Orr with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Donnell Williams had 12 points and 19 rebounds.

“Darryl Curry is a fierce competitor. He knows that we are a little short-handed right now and he is doing whatever it takes to get us through,” Adams said.

Curry said he appreciates the confidence that his coach is showing him.

“I am one of the leaders on this team,” Curry said. “I learned from the players ahead of me and it is all about getting the win.”

Farragut coach Williams Nelson said he was very disappointed.

“Sometimes you just can’t explain why it goes the way it does,” Nelson said. “There is no way I would have ever imagined that we would shoot the ball as poorly as we did today. Every player in the locker room is very upset with their performance today.”

Adams led Farragut with a team high of 20 points and Ernest Johnson and Ameer Jackson had 10 each.
