On Thursday, during a week of Hobbit-related features on “The Colbert Report,” the host mostly succeeded in holding his own during a chat with the malicious, trash-talking, Rand Paul-supporting winged tyrant (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) from Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy, the final installment of which (Battle of Five Armies) hits theaters Wed., Dec. 17. It might just be Colbert’s finest interview of 2014. It’s certainly his most creative. Enjoy.
