WONDER LAKE — A Wonder Lake couple didn’t make it to the hospital before their baby was born, but a church ended up doing just fine.

Crystal Smith, 25, and her boyfriend, Travis Vincent, headed for a McHenry hospital around 3:50 a.m. Saturday after Smith began have contractions. But when Smith’s water broke on the way, the couple pulled into the Wonder Lake Fire Station parking lot, where she was transferred to an ambulance.

The Northwest Herald reports the ambulance ended up stopping at the Maranatha Assembly of God Church because the baby was coming.

Smith gave birth to Kamdyn James Vincent in the parking lot at 4:51 a.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Weber says firefighter-assisted deliveries are unusual, but his crew “couldn’t have asked for a better delivery.”
