(LAKE VILLA) A man whose body was pulled from a north suburban lake drowned Sunday evening after witnesses saw the boater go into the water and not resurface.

The body of 60-year-old Joseph Benedetto, of Lake Villa, was recovered from the waters of Stanton Bay off Fox Lake about 9:30 p.m., authorities said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the preliminary cause of death was listed as drowning, according to the Lake County Coroner’s office.

Authorities responded to Stanton Bay at 4:47 p.m. after a witness saw the man go into the water off a pleasure craft, but not come up, Antioch Fire Department Officer Chris Lienhardt said.

Authorities attempted a rescue operation for an hour before switching to recovery mode, Lienhardt said.
