(HAMMOND, Ind.) A northwest Indiana man was shot to death Tuesday night while working on a vehicle in his backyard.

Martin Hurtado, 45, was in his backyard in the 800 block of South State Street in Hammond working on a vehicle when he was shot once in the shoulder at 9:20 p.m., according to Hammond police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Hurtado was taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead at 10:14 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
