(SCHAUMBURG) Sixty people were left homeless following a northwest suburban fire that injured one person and heavily damaged a three-building apartment complex.

The fire started about 7:10 a.m. in the center of three, three-story apartment buildings in the 2300 block of Discovery Drive, Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said.

Responding firefighters saw flames blowing out the rear window of a third-floor apartment in the center building. Flames spread through the attic to the buildings on either side, Nebl said.

All three buildings are now uninhabitable because of fire, smoke or water damage. A total of 60 people — including 20 children — lived in 17 units at the complex, and the Chicago Red Cross is helping them find food and a place to stay, a spokesman said.

One person was injured and taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, but the injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, Nebl said.

Crews brought the fire under control in about an hour, he said. The cause remains under investigation.
