(GURNEE) Three high school students in north suburban Gurnee could face child pornography charges in connection with a sexting incident involving another student, police said Thursday.

Charges have been referred to the Lake County state’s attorney’s office against three Warren Township High School freshman boys, Gurnee police said in a statement. Each could face one count of distribution of child pornography, police said. They have been released to their parents.

An investigation found another Warren student, a freshman girl, was the victim of alleged cyberbullying and sexting, police said.

The school confirmed the investigation in a statement on its website, but did not provide specifics, saying “this is a student matter.”

Police urge parents to monitor their children’s phone use.
