A man was shot and critically wounded early Saturday in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The man, 19, was walking with friends in the 3500 block of West Diversey about 4:40 a.m. when someone approached and started yelling gang slogans, police said. When the 19-year-old began running away, the person yelling slogans fired shots, striking the man in the back.

The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
