(VILLA PARK) Villa Park police are warning residents about two recent ruse burglary attempts in the western suburb.

On Tuesday, a person knocked on the door of a home in the 100 block of East Van Buren Street about 10:30 a.m. and said he was a water department employee, police said.

He asked to come inside and check the water meter, but he left when the homeowner refused to let him in, police said.

He left by the time police arrived, and authorities confirmed he was not from the water department, police said. A similar incident happened Friday in the 1000 block of North Cornell Street.

The suspect is described as a tall white man in his 30s, wearing a brown hoodie and a cream-colored hat, police said.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call 911.
