Teens charged with arson following house fire in Crystal Lake

(CRYSTAL LAKE) Three teenagers were arrested and charged with arson last week after police claim they intentionally started a fire that destroyed a northwest suburban Crystal Lake home.

The three unidentified teens, ages 13 to 15, face one count each of arson and residential arson; and two counts each of criminal damage to property, all felonies, according to a statement from Crystal Lake police.

On March 22, the home at 62 Barberry Dr. in Crystal Lake was destroyed by a fire, police said.

Police said the teens intentionally started a fire in the home’s garage, which spread to the interior of the residence, police said.

The resident was not home at the time and no one was injured, but the building and all of its contents were damaged by fire smoke or water, police said. Damages were estimated to reach $180,000 and the home was subsequently demolished.

Following an investigation from Crystal Lake police, Crystal Lake fire officials, the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s office and the State Fire Marshall’s office, the teens were arrested Oct. 3, police said.

All three teens were released to their parent or guardian pending an appearance in juvenile court.
