A woman was hospitalized with serious injuries after being rescued by firefighters from a burning apartment in the West Ridge neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.
The fire started just before 4 p.m. in the living room of an apartment in the 2500 block of West Fitch, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.
Firefighters went inside and rescued the woman from a bedroom in the same unit, Roccasalva said.
The 20-year-old suffered smoke inhalation was taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in fair-to-serious condition, he said.
Crews put out the fire “pretty quickly” and flames did not spread to any other units in the multi-story building, Roccasalva said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Chicago Red Cross is assisting residents affected by the fire.
