Little-known NJIT stuns No. 17 Michigan in Ann Arbor

The New Jersey Institute of Technology, previously known only as that team that went 0-29 in 2007-08, scored the upset of the college basketball season with a 72-70 stunner against 17th-ranked Michigan on Saturday in Ann Arbor.

The NJIT Highlanders, who hail from Newark, are the only independent program in the country, having joined Division I just seven years ago.

Damon Lynn scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers, and Ky Howard and Winfield Willis had 17 points apiece.

The Highlanders shot 59 percent from the floor 65 percent from 3-point range.

Per SB Nation, NJIT had only ever played two teams ranked in the top 50 on KenPom — No. 16 Georgetown in 2011-12 and No. 46 Villanova in 2012-13.
