Chicago man gets 12 years after admitting to child porn charges

A Chicago man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to owning and disseminating large amounts of child pornography.

Officials with the Cook County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force started investigating Manuel Reyes-Garcia in August after they were able to download graphic videos of child pornography from his computer, prosecutors said.

On Sept. 3, authorities searched his home in the 5700 block of South California and recovered six computers and 27 DVDs, prosecutors said. A forensic exam of the items found the same videos downloaded by investigators, as well as depictions of sex acts involving minors and “scenes of sadistic sexual abuse.”

Reyes-Garcia, 47, pleaded guilty to two counts of child pornography, a class X felony, the Cook County state’s attorney’s office said.

Judge Arthur Hill sentenced Reyes-Garcia to two consecutive six-year prison terms at a hearing Wednesday. He must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison, the state’s attorney’s office said.
