(WAUKEGAN) A Waukegan man was charged after police say he shot a man while trying to intervene in an argument in the north suburb on Sunday.

Police say 58-year-old Milton Whittington, of the 2500 block of Village Park Drive, tried to intervene in a verbal argument in a parking lot near his home on Sept. 28 about 12:30 p.m., according to a statement from Waukegan police. The argument was between a woman related to Whittington and another man.

Whittington then shot the man in the abdomen, police said. He was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Whittington was charged with aggravated battery and aggravated battery with a firearm, the statement said. He was released on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 15.
