More than 200 flights canceled Tuesday at Chicago airports

As of noon Tuesday, four full days after Friday’s FAA Aurora fire, O’Hare still held the title of worst airport for cancellations in the nation.

FlightStats.com Tuesday was listing 210 cancelled flights at O’Hare and 403 delays, some as long as 247 minutes. However, that was an improvement from Monday’s 326 O’Hare cancellations and 1,056 delays.

Midway’s cancellations Tuesday had shrunk to 4 and delays to only 53, according to the website.

Travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines for flight updates.

Flight delays are expected to continue through the week at both airports after Friday’s fire damaged an Aurora radar facility. That damage led to a total air traffic shutdown in the Chicago area.

The facility should be fully restored by Oct. 13, federal aviation officials said earlier this week.

The man accused of setting the fire, 36-year-old Brian Howard of Naperville, was ordered held without bond Monday on a federal charge of damaging airport equipment.

O’Hare has been leading the nation in daily cancellations since Friday. Only two days before the incident, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that O’Hare had finally won back the crown as “world’s busiest airport” from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
