(HOMEWOOD) Police and state child welfare authorities are investigating the death Thursday of a 4-month-old girl at an apartment in south suburban Homewood.

Jacinta Hughes was pronounced dead at her home at 9:19 a.m., and the cause of death was undetermined as of Thursday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Friday proved inconclusive, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police declined to provide details of the death or their investigation.

A spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said the department is investigating allegations of neglect against the girl’s parents.

While the investigation is pending, two of Jacinta’s siblings who live in the home have been placed in DCFS protective custody.

A woman who lives across the street told the Southtown Star that officers were at the 12-unit building in the 18200 block of Hart Drive from about 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“There were police cars all over the street. I saw someone being placed into an ambulance,” the woman, who didn’t want to give her name, said.

Another woman who requested anonymity said she saw a man being taken from the scene by police, but “he was not handcuffed.”
