(ELGIN) A bicyclist is in critical condition after a vehicle struck him Tuesday in northwest suburban Elgin.

The crash happened about 9 pm. near the intersection of Summit and Hill streets, Elgin police said in a statement.

Investigators later learned the vehicle was heading westbound on Summit Street when it hit the bicyclist, who was riding across the lanes of traffic near Hill Street, police said.

The 21-year-old Elgin man on the bicycle was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin where he remains in critical condition Wednesday, police said.

The 41-year-old Elgin man driving the car is not expected to face any charges or citations, police said.
