Crystal Lake police warn of fake IRS calls

(CRYSTAL LAKE) Police in northwest suburban Crystal Lake are warning residents about a series of scam phone calls claiming to come from the IRS.

Several people have reported receiving automated calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS, according to Crystal Lake police. The caller instructs victims to contact an agent at a separate number to resolve an outstanding tax bill or face legal action.

Police said such calls are a scam and residents should not respond to similar calls, emails or text messages. The IRS is aware of the scam and is looking into it, police said.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call or believes they have been victims of a scam should contact police to report the incident.
