A man has been charged with DUI for a crash Saturday afternoon in which a passenger lost his arm and later died.

About 1 p.m., 37-year-old Dwayne Montgomery was driving a car with a passenger in the 8200 block of South South Chicago Avenue when it struck a light pole, according to a statement from Chicago Police. The car then “careened” into a parked car.

The passenger, 44-year-old Tremayne Bonds, had his arm severed in the crash, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Bonds, of the 8400 block of South Manistee, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 6:09 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

An autopsy Monday found he died of multiple injuries from an automobile striking a fixed object, and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Montgomery was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition and remains hospitalized, police said.

A police source said responding officers detected a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, and that he had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

A bottle of vodka was recovered at the scene, a police source said.

Montgomery, of the 2800 block of East 83rd, is charged with one felony count of aggravated DUI causing a fatal accident, one misdemeanor count of driving on a revoked license and two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, police said. He is scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday.
