Two detainees charged with attacks at Cook County Jail

Two detainees have been charged with recent attacks on an attorney and correctional officer at the Cook County Jail.

On Dec. 10, Jimmie Smith, 39, punched and stabbed one of his public defenders with a makeshift knife inside Division 9 of the jail, according to a statement from the Cook County sheriff’s office. Smith was handcuffed during the attack.

Correctional officers took custody of Smith and called 911, according to the statement. The attorney was treated at a hospital.

Smith was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of contraband in a penal institution, according to the sheriff’s office. He was already being held without bond on charges of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and two counts of contraband in a penal institution.

On Dec. 2, Aaron Donaldson, 32, punched a correctional officer at Cermak Hospital inside the jail compound, knocking the officer out, according to the statement. Donaldson was also handcuffed at the time.

The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment. Donaldson was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer and was ordered held on a $200,000 bond.
