Five people were injured in two crashes that occurred in the same time on Interstate 55 in southwest suburban Shorewood Monday night.

About 7 p.m., a Honda Accord and Jeep Grand Cherokee were involved in a crash in the northbound lanes of I-55 near Route 52, according to a statement from Illinois State Police. A Honda Accord, trying to avoid the crash, then struck a motorist from the previous crash who was outside their vehicle.

The person struck by the Accord was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, police said. Three people were taken to Morris Hospital in Morris and another was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn by helicopter.

Police did not disclose their ages, genders or conditions.

Charges are pending in the crash, police said.
