‘Birdman’ score nixed from Oscar race

Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Birdman” already is leading the race to Oscar night in February, but one category in which the acclaimed film starring Michael Keaton won’t compete for an Academy Award this year is the one for best musical score.

At issue, according to the Music Branch of the Academy (which determines what scores make the final cut for Oscar consideration), is the fact that the score by Antonio Sanchez is dominated by drums and there is too much use of other, non-original musical tracks. Despite pending appeals by Inarritu and the film’s producers, Academy insiders reported Monday that it doesn’t look like they will be successful.
